A map displaying our Upper and Lower Stikine River trips.
We begin in the remote ''Gold Rush'' town of Telegraph Creek…
This was the ''jumping off point'' for prospectors headed for the interior at the turn of the century.
Steamers like this one plied the waters of the Stikine from the ocean town of Wrangell Alaska. Famous naturalist John Muir traveled the Stikine in those days and, in a great compliment, called it ''a Yosemite 100 miles long''.
The lower Stikine winds through the dramatic Coast Range.
The Lower Stikine River is extremely swift but flat. The greatest challenge to canoeists are the many log jams that line the shores.
Wildlife such as this Red Fox are ever prevelent
The large stable Voyageur canoe is one of the options for river craft. Each one holds a guide and 6 participants. Here in this shot from '96, you see Neil, his son Lars and his father, Roy
Mountains and Mist make for a dramatic atmosphere.
The lush growth is indicative of the coastal weather influence.
Tandem canoe.
Tandem canoes and Voyageur canoe in the Little Canyon.
One of the old steamers winching up the Little Canyon on a cable. It was a miracle that they survived this exercise with the wooden hulled boats and the rocky cliffs.
A Stikine camp.
Canoeing into the Coast Range.
We hike a short distance from the river to Great Glacier Lake. The trail takes you through lush rain forest.
Thick moss hangs from the trees.
At Great Glacier Lake we canoe among the ice bergs that have ''calved'' off the Great Glacier.
We keep a respectful distance from the bergs as they can split and roll with explosive force!
A fairy tale setting!
A ''must do'' in the career of every canoeist!
After crossing the boarder into Alaska, we are treated to the warmth of Chief Shakes Hot Springs!
Back on the river we paddle through Tongass National Forest with the Coast Range towering above us.
Leaving the Stikine, we paddle into the estuary, a fertile nesting ground for bird life.
We finish at Wrangel, Alaska where we may spot historic Petroglyphs.
In Wrangell we board a ferry which will take us up the Inside Passage of the Alaskan Panhandle, to Skagway, where we will be picked up by our van. The drive back to Whitehorse is through the scenic Whitepass of Gold Rush fame.
